In 2003, Aron Ralston went for a solo hike when an 800 pound boulder shifted and trapped his arm. Ralston had only planned for a one day hike, and his water supply ran out after about three days. Completely exhausted on the fifth day, Ralston knew he had to take action, so he cut his arm off just under the elbow. Fighting the pain, he then rigged anchors, and repelled 75 feet down to the canyon floor. Slowly hiking back to camp, he was then spotted by a rescue helicopter and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. He fully recovered, despite his serious injuries and still enjoys hiking.
Ralston is a very determined man, and does not let his handicap hold him back. Being an avid hiker, he has climbed almost all of the ‘fourteeners’ in Colorado. Fourteeners are mountains that are higher the fourteen thousand feet. He is also very optimistic, and has a very positive outlook on life. Even though he as a handicap, he does not let himself think negatively, which helps him overcome big obstacles in his life. He believes in himself and has good self confidence, so he does not let people bring him down.

Aron Lee Ralston was born October 27, 1975, he is an American mountain climber who was forced to amputate his lower right arm with a knife in order to save himself when his arm was crushed by a boulder. Aron made a book about his experience called Between a Rock and a Hard Place, published by Atria Books on September 7, 2004.
While he was on a trip in Blue John Canyon, a boulder fell and crushed it. But his hand died days before he amputated it from lack of circulation. He also had to drink his own bodily fluids to try and stay alive. Finally after five days of fruitless attemts to lift or break the boulder, Ralston, dehydrated and delirious broke his arm against a rock. Using his multiuse tool, he cut the soft tissue around the break. Then he used the tool's pliers to tear at the tendons. But he was still 8 miles away from his truck that was sadly a standard. After Aron Ralston was rescued, his arm was retrieved by park rangers, they brough his arm. It then was cremated and given to Ralston. He returned to the boulder later and left the ashes there. He emerged from the canyon and was rushed to St. Mary's hospital in Grand Junction. Before the accident he was a student of mechanical engineering and French at Carnegie Mellon University. He is now a public speaker, and still climbs mountains. In 2005, Ralston became the first person to climb all of Colorado's mountains over 14,000 feet tall solo in winter. Since his experience he has been on many shows like The Late Show, Dateline NBC.
A man named Sampson Parker was harvesting corn in his field when some corn stalks got caught in his harvesting machine. Parker, with a lack of judgement because the machine was still running, put his hand in the machine while it was still running to get the corn out. Unimaginably, his arm was sucked into the machine. Even with all his efforts, he was not able to pull his arm out of the machine so he tried to jam a metal rod in the rotary mechanism to stop it spinning. Although the metal rod did stop the spinning, it made sparks fly where it was jammed, causing the field to light on fire. Parker took out his pocket knife and cut his arm off down to the bone, although his knife was sharp, he was not able to cut through his bone, he then bent down and broke his own arm so he was able to cut it the rest of the way through. Above all, the tire of his harvester exploded, causing him to fly through the air and clear the fire. Despite his injuries, he was able to drive his battered pick-up truck out to the highway. Arriving just in time, a man, like a hero to Parker, who was driving down the highway, came to his rescue and called a helicopter to lift him to the hospital. His life was saved.
This man did an amazing thing that took a lot of courage, stamina and nerve. Although it must have been extremely painful, he was able to cut off his arm and get away from his jeopardous field. Parker had a lot of nerve and stamina to be able to endure this hardship. This individual had courage because he was able to do this amazing act and to be able to think about his situation before he acted even though he must have been panicking and full of fear.

In the summer of 1912 a man named Douglas Mawson A 30 year old Australian explorer led 25 men to eastern Antarctica. From base camp, in Commonwealth Bay he set off with a dog handler named Belgrave Ninnis and world ski champion Xavier Mertz. After six weeks, the three men and 12 remaining dogs covered only a quarter of the 1,200 miles they hoped to travel. The day they turned back Ninnis, their six strongest dogs and the food sledge vanished.
The two that were left only had 1 week worth of food. They started killing the weakest dogs to eat them but the didn't know that the dogs were poisoning them slowly. after 3 week Mertz was dead. The poison made big strips of skin fall off. Douglas was only 5 miles away from bass camp but he found a cave and stayed there for 1 week then he set off to camp. When he got to camp there were people waiting for him the boat had took off 6 hours earlier so they had to wait till the boat came back and they wait 10 month before it cam Douglas survived and was very lucky.

An 11 year old child got in to the media spotlight after biting into the neck of a ravenous, hungry pit bull. Although gabriel almeida was in his uncles backyard it was still very dangerous in the city of belo horizonte. In the backyard of gabriel almeidas uncles house a extremely scary pt bull came and it the 11 year old in the left arm. Suddenly the boy grabbed the pit bull who bit his arm and bit him in the neck. He lost his canine tooth. while this was happening the stone masons working near by sprit over and chased the pit bull away. according to the new papers the pit bull was caught and brought to the pound and might get killed.
1 I strongly believe that the boy was courageous. 2 Inside the mind of gabriel he was probably scared. 3 Surly people might believe that gabriel is a dare devil because i don't no any one that would do anything like this. 5 Since this happened I'm sure people will take caution to their children and what is surrounding them. 6 i would be terrified! 4 astounded i am that an 11 year old boy which stood up to something i couldn't begin to even think about doing.

Amy Racina went on a hike in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and fell off a 60-foot cliff. Hitting the extremely hard stone at the bottom of the cliff she broke both of her legs. Amazingly she started crawling along the ground with only her arms. Although she was trying hard to be found it took 4 days and nights until she was found. When she was found she was picked up and slung under a swaying helicopter by just 2 ropes.

Man Cuts Off Arm After Having It Trapped Under a Bolder
What would you do if this happened to you? While on a wilderness hike in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, hiker Aron Ralston encountered a terrifying problem. As he was walking along a trail, an 800 lb. boulder fell from above, pinning his arm on the side of the canyon wall. He attempted for 5 days to remove his arm, but did not succeed. By the time his food supply began to run low, he had decided to take desperate measures because he knew he was going to die if he stayed there. So, although he was terrified, he took out his pocketknife and began to cut off his arm. However, the pocketknife wasn't sharp enough to break through his skin, so he decided to break his arm. After breaking his arm, he eventually cut through and freed himself from the boulder. He followed the trail he was on, until he met up with other hikers, who called a helicopter to come and save him. Arriving shortly after the call, the helicopter came and Aron received the medical attention he needed. Luckily, today he's still alive.
Who would be able to do that? 3 characteristics that Aron Ralston showed when this happened were courage, determination and endurance. If I were in that predicament, I would not have been able to put myself through the pain and self-torture that he managed to do. Showing courage was very good, because he didn't give up through the whole ordeal, which would be extremely hard, since he was in so much pain. By showing determination, he was able to pull himself through until the end. Lastly, endurance was shown by him putting himself through the pain and agony of this terrible event. He is lucky that he had the guts to put himself through that. He's a hero for everyone.

While Colby Coombs, 25 years old, and his two partners/Best friends set out for their laborious expedition to conquer the climb on the 17400 foot Mount. Fotaker on June 1992, a tragic accident occurred. Suddenly snow rapidly lashed the ground beneath them, which resulted in an Avalanche. After the 800 foot plunge to the icy ground Colby Coombs was as broken as a smashed beer bottle, with two fractured vertebrates, a broken shoulder blade, and a fractured ankle. Observing his dead friends was catastrophic to him because he was now stranded on a mountain with no civilization for miles and miles and he was mangled. Shocked from the experience he had to brace himself and stay sane. Colby Coombs remained calm which helped him through his strenuous journey to stay alive, he managed to shut out everything; emotions, fear, and pain just to get through this. Against all odds, he survived!
While Colby Coombs horrifying expedition occurred, he displayed three main characteristics, which include being courageous, knowledgeable, and having faith. Demonstrating these qualities wasn't like taking candy from a baby because he was injured in multiple areas. Persistently he demonstrated courage even with all the trauma done to his body, he kept going even when he saw his friend dangling lifelessly from a rope, he had the courage to live and a passion to go back to his teaching. That courageous Colby Coombs.Before he began to hike the strenuous way back, he used his knowledge to shut out everything around him which includes; pain, fear and emotion. Abandoned on the face of Mount. Fotaker Colby kept faith, I don't believe that he would of made it if he didn't have faith. Faith kept him going, he told himself he would make it and he trusted his own abilities to get himself home safely.
In 2003 courageous 27 year old Aron Ralston found himself entangled with his right arm pinned beneath an 800 pound boulder. While he was stuck there for 5 endless days with only half an Oreo and a litre of water that went very fast everyone wondered where he went. Tragically he sat on the canyon he often contemplated death and plans of how to get out of this sticky situation. Trying super hard, he attempted yanking the boulder off with ropes, and pathetically chipping away at the rock but after many unsuccessful attempts to free him self he decided that amputation was his only choice. Indeed it would be difficult and he would suffer through immense amounts of pain. He was scared. On Thursday May 1 Aron took out his dull pocket knife and worked on his arm for hours and the following day he had finally freed himself and rappelled down 60 feet to safety and soon found the hikers whom he had met before. They helped him get to a hospital. Brave Aron Ralston under went many surgeries to prepare his right arm for prosthesis.
In order to amputate your own arm I think you must need a whole lot of courage! Also he would need knowledge because without it he would have bled to death! Lastly you would need faith, in your self and in god! Fortunately 27 year old Aron Ralston had alot of this. Courage is such an important trait and he used it all the time, when he ran out of water and drank urine, and when he cut of his limb. Without his knowledge in first aid he would not have know to use a tourniquet to stop the bleeding of the arteries. The last trait, faith, is a major trait of survival because it gives you hope that you will survive.

The two confident men went hunting earlyin the morning. They were walking down the trail by themselves when one of them saw movement in the woods. It was a mother bear and her two cubs.
As soon as the sow saw him, she came charging at full speed. Stunned, he started running up the trail yelling to his partner, " It's a bear, get your spray!" Which they now know that running away from the bear wasn't very smart.
The bear started wailing at them crunching down on his
head. He thought he was going to die. His partner sprayed the pepper spray into the bears face, now she attacked his partner! He was desperately crawling away as fast as he could when the grizzly pounced
on him, crushing him to the ground. The bear started chewing at his arm then turned her back to his partner again. He tossed the can of pepper spray at the bear and she finally ran off. They both wobbled to their
vehicle struggling to
stay awake. The pain kicked in.
Three qualities that helped them survive was desperation. An example was when he crawled as fast as he could to get away from the bear. Another trait was knowledge which was important because his
partner sprayed the pepper spray at the bear knowing that he might be killed. A final trait was courage. Although they started running away, as soon as the bear started attacking them, he tried to
stay as still as possible while the bear was attacking him.
My survival story is going to be about William Jeracki, who had to painfully amputate his leg to survive. Fishing at a creek near St. Mary's Glacier, William Jeracki fell into a predicament which almost killed him. While fishing, he dislodged a large boulder, which then fell on his left leg and crushed it. Because there was a deadly snowstorm coming, he was wearing light clothing, and he told no one where he went, he knew there was no other decision. After three hours, he applied a turnkey to his leg and started cutting it off like a wolf in a bear trap. Afterwards he got to his truck and drove to Alice-St Marys and was quickly air-lifted to a hospital. This is my amazing survival story about William Jeracki.
William Jeracki had a few characteristics that allowed him to make it through this deadly tale. Mainly, the defining characteristic that got him through this is endurance. Since he was able to cut his own leg off, then crawl to his vehicle, then drive half a mile while missing his left leg, this makes endurance the main characteristic. Although this isn't a major characteristic, intelligence played a role too. Because he knew to cut circulation from his leg, he didn't bleed to death. And those are characteristics that got William through this, although there are some more.

This story started when Al Hill was cutting trees down in a remote forest and a tree fell on him. Amazingly he survived it and stayed crushed under the tree for a devastating 11 hours. Under the tree he didn't have any food or water he just layed there and suffered. Finally he tried to get the huge tree off his leg but it was to no use. So he decided to try to take a very painful way to escape. Cutting off his own leg.3. Eventually he cut it off and crawled to his truck and drove to a town and he was sent to a hospital.
Al Hill, 66, was cutting trees on a property near the Big Dipper Mine last Friday when a tree fell on his leg and trapped him, authorities said. Alone in the woods and in an area where cellular phone service is spotty or nonexistent, Hill was forced to take the extreme measure to save himself.
Although he was trapped under a tree he managed to stay alive and concentrated on getting out alive. Mainly he just kept on saying in his head "I'm going to get out of this" and it turns out he did. He stayed strong.

On sunday, March sixteenth around four in the morning abrupt chaos and truthfully horrifying noise commenced. Thankfully, Daniel Moreno, Drew Nalewanski, and Brian Stanley were located at the hotel that unfortunate night and were able to save all other students in the building. Smoking, burning, and falling apart the hotel was in as terrible shape as sumo-wrestler but still the young men were able to have this terrible tragedy averted. Fire sparked in a laundry-room. The young men, saved very many lives including which the 502 students that filled rooms all throughout the hotels two towers. "Never have my lungs and chest burned like they did in that building" quoted one of the courageous young men. Since there were no serious injuries very many people were relieved because to see such horror turn into no more than people helping others was heart warming.
In adverse conditions one must overcome the inauspicious fear and decide what they are going to do. Heroically that is what three men did, Daniel Moreno, Drew Nalewanski, and Brian Stanley, and they prevailed adversity and risked themselves for others. Thinking about others was the only thing the young men were doing, and to prove they surmounted adversity
Evan S. Dobelle, college president quoted "Although they went off on spring break to have fun, like thousands of other students, they distinguished themselves by coming together in the face of adversity because they knew they would, not only saving themselves, but many others."
When the men were finished with their noble acts the were freed outdoors which compared to the hotel was very cold. The young men are very proud of what they did and the fact the worked so cohesively was very important to them. Great, strong bravery was needed. We are very proud to tell the story of the young men that overcame adversity and went to save people's lives, with great bravery this was committed and we are very thankful to see they were so cautious in this act, and made sure they knocked on every door...

A Father and his autistic son survived a night in the waters eight miles off the coast of Volusia Country after treading water more than 12 hours. Walter Marino and his son Chris Marino were caught in an outgoing current and swept out to sea. Amazingly Coast guards found them about 50 feet north of the south jetty by 11 p.m. on Saturday. Boaters aboard The Open Range located Walter Marino at about 7:30 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles east of Ponce Inlet. He was then transferred to a Coast Guard boat for transport. He was dehydrated, but OK."The Coast Guards Rock" was walter Marino's comment. "God bless the Coast Guard"A Coast guard rescue helicopter from the air station they located his son about two hours later. Walter Marino said he floated and waited for help for 13 hours, and his son, who has autism, treaded water even longer ay 15 hours.Christopher Marino was taken to Halifax Medical Center in Daytona, Fla. His condition was not immediately known. As he left Halifax Medical Center, Walter Marino thanked everyone who looked for him and his son. The family said they're still in shock both father and son survived.
Its amazing how they are still alive the coast guards did a great job it takes much to do this and not give hope up so easily. Unfortunately at one point they gave up but after a couple of hours they found him the father was found after 13 HOURS thats really amazing and his son that had autism was found after 15 HOURS this show's how lucky or how the people say there "Blessed" the Marino's were so happy and Walter said that he will never do that mistake again swimming out that far he was worried about his son all the 13 Hours he was out there. But amazingly they found each other after 15 Hours on the open see without being hurt just tired from that Journey.

Why did I almost hack my gusts up when I read this article? It was as alerting as the movie "Alaska" was. I was in the greatest suspense as if I were watching the best gruesome, horrific, terrifying, and most awesome movie ever. This guy was in such crucial pain and damage and was still living long enough to get down the mountain to get to a hospital. Stories like the one above can get you to picture it in your head so perfectly and be able to see every detail of what the tragedy would've seemed like. He never saw his friends ever again since he last saw the dangling on ropes and having their faces bashed into the ice. He is now an older guy with his dream of climbing that mountain that went right down the drain because of the treacherous storm.

"How come is this guy still alive?" He did everything that you were to do when climbing a 17,400- foot mountain. There was no way of saying how he was going to really survive the fall. His friends just didn't have as much luck as he did. Kellogg, and Walter his two friends that joined him on the miraculous journey were very close to him. One was a real good college buddy of his, but I guess Colby just had a lot more to live for than the others I guess. Their lives all had a special something they were going to do which could have been this, but a lifelong career could've been ahead of them too.

Chris was excited because it was a lovely day out and he enjoyed the feeling of the sun against his shorts and t-shirt, he was planning to be back down the mountain by sundown. Before 10:30 he was off, enjoying his lunch as soon as he was ready to go again the weather seemed to get colder and cloudier.. Coincidentally after it started to pour and i fell slipped on a rock and broke his weak leg.. Panicking because he realized that he told everyone that he would be back in a week so they wouldn't come looking for him, he weighed his options. 6. He decided to crawl down the mountain. 5. As he found branches to make a brace he thought of how he would stay warm for the rest of the trip, he also found stable branches as a make shift crutch. While "walking" down the mountain slowly nightfall creeped up and he still had two miles to go. Everything was soaked through. Sleeplessly he survived the night and had accomplished one mile by three o'clock the next day, thankfully by sunset he only had 2/3 of a mile left. Scraping his way down the mountain he finally finished and scrambled to a rangers office where he was taken care of.
I think that in this inspiring story Chris showed incredible strength and determination. Behind the pain of his broken leg he still managed to keep his head on and not panic. Thankfully he overcame the horror of being left up in a mountain in the middle of a rapid snowstorm so that he can still hug his family today. Becoming his own sacred savior. If he had given up some where along the line then he could not be making memories which he will treasure for the rest of his life. He thanks god every amazing night. On those few days and awful nights he has became his own hero and will never forget the night that the wind howled so violently.

Terry fox is a person who had bone cancer that started in his leg. Before he had bone cancer in his leg terry had a dream to run across Canada. Knowing that his time was shortened because of the cancer he decided to embark for his journey immediately. Terry had planed to fill two really big water bottles of Atlantic Ocean water, one to keep as a souvenir and the other to pour into the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately terry fox was unable to finish his dream because the cancer, which crippled his leg, had spread throughout his lungs.
Some of the only reasons that terry fox was able to run around 5000 kilometers is because he had a dream. he was willing to do anything to accomplish this dream. He had determination to keep running everyday. He had the courage to run around Canada with nothing more then a small crew most of the times. And he had the strength to do it with a fake leg and cancer eating at him. It was because of Terry fox that millions of people with cancer could live and be with there families. Even today people thank and celebrate him.
