What does it take to survive in the wilderness? What characteristics/qualities do people possess that make them able to live through unimaginable hardships? Read the blog assignment and then post your paragraphs here.
There was three guys in June 1992 who attempted to climb Mount Foraker. As they got closer to their goal, the mountain let loss and they all fell. One guy woke up 6 hours later which he was suffering from two fractured vertebrae in his neck, a broken shoulder blade, and a fractured ankle. He saw his friend and rope over and found him dead. He climbed down to find his other friend dead. After reaching base camp, he still had to complete a dangerous five-mile crossing of Kahiltna Glacier, and if he fell in there was no way to surviving and getting himself out. Amazingly he made it across.
One of the many things that helped him survive are determination because he ignored the pain and kept going on, which would of been very hard to do, but he had to so he could move on to rescue. Another thing that helped him survive is ignorance because he shut out all thoughts of his dead friends so that he didn't have to think about all the good times and then cry, which would screw him up in the next statement. The last thing that helped him survive is persevering because he didn't give and kept his eyes open so they would not freeze shut because then he would be stranded and would die.
My survival story that I found is about a lady named Tami Oldham Ashcraft. Her and her boyfriend were taking a 44 foot yacht down to San Diego. They got caught in a category 4 hurricane. Their boat flipped and her boyfriend was taken over board. She had to make a mast and a sail to get back to land. It took her 40 days to get back to shore. This lady had perseverance, hard working, and determination. Personally I think she used all 3 when building the mass and making a new sail because that is long and boring. I think she also persevered because she did not give up hope which is a very hard thing to do when out their so long. Around the time she made the mast ,which is a lot of work she showed determination to finish and to survive. Sailing on the sea for so long and have to run the ship by yourself is a lot of work so that is when she showed that she is hardworking.
Colby Coombs, a 25-year-old national outdoor Leadership School instructor went on a vacation in June 1922 to Alaska. Him and his buddies went out mountain climbing on a 17,400-foot mountain called Mount Foraker. They were determined to put a new finish on the pink panther route in 3 days. As they neared their goal a horrific storm rolled in and the mountain let loose! The powerful avalanche knocked Coombs and his companions 800 feet down the side of Mount Foraker. This killed both of Coombs friends. When Coombs woke up six hours later he was dangling from his rope. He had suffered from two fractured vertebrae in his neck, a broken shoulder blade, and a fractured ankle. Even with his injuries be had to pick his way back down the mountain to safety. When getting back down the mountain four days later he was treated for the medical help and now runs the Alaska Mountaineering School in his hometown in Talkeetna. But some might say that is all wrong and they believe that Coombs was out skiing with four friends and a man from Colorado hit any icy patch in a “no-fall” zone and was out of view. What happened after that is unclear and has no real confirmation. What they think happened was that Coombs did fall off the cliff while trying to assess his friend’s situation. The remaining two skiers called for help, but Coombs had already had the injuries sustained in the fall by the time the Alpes helicopter had arrived. When the helicopter finally reached “Colorado man” he was still breathing but died later in the hospital.
Some characteristics that would have helped Coombs is his determination. Also his positive attitude towards everything that was going down. He did not just give up just leave himself there to die.He had a family that loved him and i bet that was on his mind that whole time and pushed him to get back down the mountain to safety. one other one is staying calm not freaking when he saw his friends dead, and just kept going so he would finally be home.
This story happened a few days ago about a man and his wife who went skiing out of bounds in Banff. Blackburn, the man, had gotten rescued out of the wilderness 10 days later. Unfortunately, his wife, Fortin, did not make it. Blackburn believes that a search party should've been sent out earlier. He survived with Frost bite. Fortin died of Hyperthermia. Blackburn had made an SOS but he didn't make it apparent, like lying beside it, so the RCMP didn't know how old it was.
Blackburn believes that fire would have helped them survive. He regrets not having matches with him. He was resourceful, he drank creek water and ate leaves, disgusting and unsafe. Not a normal thing to do, but Blackburn was desperate for survival. His wife was dead and so he lived for 9 days after. It had started as a romantic skiing that turned into a horrendous week and a half of survival. His wife said she couldn't go on, and she died. He was also skillful, saying he built a makeshift hut with branches. Fortunately, he was strong, always going up to mark his SOS's and ready to defend them with his only weapon, his skies.
in this story 4 people attempt to climb the himalayas in india. they were attepmting to climb 22, 510 ft when they were stopped in there tracks buy multiple avalanches. there first avalanche hit at night well they were sleeping. they awoke covered in ice freezing snow. as they kept climbing winds picked up and temperature dropped below 0. they took shelter under a crevasses in the mountain side. snow kept pilling in on them and pushed them back towards a bottomless pit at the back of the crevasse. finally once the snow stopped they regrouped and dug what they could out. after six ours of digging they'd found what they could and were ready to go. then the second avalanche hit. it enclosed them in the crevasses and they were trapped. they dug a tunnel out but when the reached the surface a violent storm was raging on them. they decided to hide in the crevasses till there lights went out or the storm gave up. 4 days later the strom finaly gave in and they began there decent 6,000 feet back down the mountain side.
one characteristic that could have contributed to this was determination. this contributed because he never gave up and lived because he never lost hope. positive attitude because he kept telling himself that everything was going to be ok and he kept trying to distract himself from thinking he was going to die. cunning because he had the skills for survival so he could live through this terrible tragedy.
4Travelling the remote island of Hinchinbrook, off the coast of Australia, Warren Macdonald met a man named Geert Van Keulen who was hiking along a deserted beach. 5Although MacDonald was looking for solitude, Keulen convinced him to come along with him up Mount Bowen. 6That night it started to rain. 2In the middle of the night MacDonald had to get up and answer natures call. 1A freak large piece of granite fell, crushing his legs. 4Hearing MacDonald scream, Keulen woke up and saw the situation. 3Immediately, he ran for help down the mountain. 5While the water was rising quickly because of the storm, MacDonald had no way to move. 1Two days later he was air lifted to the nearest hospital. 3Unfortunately, both legs had to be amputated from the lower thigh but he survived.
MacDonald and Keulen had only met each other the day before when this tragedy struck. Knowing very well that he might die, MacDonald still trusted his life with basically a stranger. Trust was a huge factor in his survival. Another quality would be with Keulen. He had to be loyal in a way because he didn’t have to go get help for a man he barely new and saved himself from the storm. The third quality which is in all survival stories is perseverance. Both men had it and needed it to stay alive. Going down a mountain at night, during pouring rain must have been grueling. MacDonald had to sit there in agonizing pain just waiting for days for help. They did it though.
In the book "A Child Called It" by David Pelzer there is a young boy who is being severely abused by his alcoholic mother. David Pelzer wrote this book through the eyes of a child but in reality he was the child. When Dave was born until he was about four years his mother loved him like any mother should love her child. Quickly, her attitude towards him made a turn for the worse. Eventually, she called Dave "The Boy' until finally "It". The pain this child suffered was unbelievable. For example, his mother would confine him in the bathroom with a bucket of ammonia and bleach, she would feed him barely enough to survive and it was mostly whatever his brothers didn't eat or spoiled leftovers. Sadly, his teachers and the police, who knew of the abuse did not get involved until he was about twelve. By this time he had already been starved, made to sleep on a cot in the garage, 'accidentally' stabbed along with many other horrible things.
The main characteristics that made Dave survive the horrible abuse he went through are; intelligence, slyness and his strong will to survive. As Dave went through his abuse he learned little tricks that would benefit him. For example he learned that if he just took the hit or other punishment then he would have a better chance of getting fed. Also, he began to recognize that whenever his mother threw out food he could eat it from the garbage. Ultimately, his mother caught on to him eating from the garbage and ceased throwing food away. Being sly helped Dave survive because he got most of his food that way. At school he would steal from his classmates lunches and would snatch food from convenience stores on the way home. When he was at home he snuck food from the deep freeze and quickly ate it in the garage so he would not get caught. By saying he has a strong will to survive it is refering to how no matter what happened to him he did not want to die and he always loved his mother. In his dreams he would often see a family who loved and cared for him. His incredible will to survive was fueled by those dreams.

On Christmas Eve 1971, German teenager Juliane Koepcke sat next to her mother in the window seat of a Lockheed Electra. She had just graduated from high school in Lima, Peru, and was on her way to Pucallpa, where she and her mother would rendezvous with her father, biologist Hans Koepcke. But the plane never made it. The Electra hit a freak storm, and the 17-year-old girl looked out the window to see the right wing aflame. She turned to her mother, who said, "This is the end of everything." The last thing Juliane remembers is feeling herself whirling in midair.
She awoke three hours later, still strapped into her seat, in the Amazon. Miraculously, she had only fractured her collarbone, gashed her right arm, and lost vision in one eye. She began looking for her mother, but all she found were empty seats and a row of three young women, covered in flies. Of the 92 people on board, Koepcke was the lone survivor. Although in shock, she remembered her father's advice: Heading downhill in the jungle leads to water, and water leads to civilization. Koepcke bushwhacked along the rainforest floor, frequently hearing planes above, but she had no way to signal them. On the tenth day, she came across a hunter's hut, outfitted with salt and kerosene, which Koepcke used to clean worms out of her skin. The next day, a group of Peruvian hunters arrived. They took her to the town of Tournavista, where a local pilot flew her to her father, in Pucallpa.
"She was in the middle of the jungle," says Herb Golder, who in 1998 revisited Peru with Juliane—now 50 and a zoologist living in Germany—while working as assistant director on Wings of Hope, Werner Herzog's documentary about the ordeal. "And this 17-year-old girl in a torn miniskirt and one sandal walks out alive."
My story was about a 54 year old man ad a 44 year old women who went skiing off trails and were lost, The 54 year old man miraculously survived this 10 day adventure but his wife is yet to be found and has been considered dead. He only had frost bite for injuries.
One of the many things that might have helped him surive is his positive attitude toward the situation. If he had been negative and not have acted the way he did he would have for sure been dead. Being confident in the situation can help you think of creative ways to get the essintal you need to survive out in the wild. He used water from Black Burn creek and ate leaves to help surive the hunger and thirst
